During the old Exchange migration from On-Premise into the Microsoft Cloud Migration (Office 365 / Exchange Online) I've uses a PST Export/Import option (officialy supported by Microsoft for a small organizations). Approx 30 of user mailboxes has been exported and imported into the new Office 365 by using PST files and Microsoft 365 Outlook. Public Folders has been exported as well into the PST. Now I faced a situation when I have to import PST files of Public Folders from an old Exchange into the new Office 365 / Exchange online Public Folders and I've found an information on a Microsoft website that it is not supported:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/importing-pst-files-to-office-365?view=o365-worldwide

Can I use network upload to import PST files to public folders in Exchange Online? No, you can't import PST files to public folders.

Can I use drive shipping to import PST files to public folders in Exchange Online? No, you can't import PST files to public folders.

Any ideas how to import such PST files into the Office 365 Publice Folders ?

I've found out a solution. Hopefully the exported Public Folders were not to big (not over 30 GB when a data file split may be triggered an Microsoft Cloud which could take up to 2 weeks of import as stated by Microsoft). The solution - I would say a workaround - was :

  1. Prepare exported Public Folders PST files (exported from old Exchange via old Outlook)
  2. Open a new Microsoft 365 Outlook with your mailbox
  3. Import the Public Folders PST files into your mailbox to a separate folders by selecting to import all messages under you mailbox - not to the public folders (a new structure of folders will be created under your mailbox)
  4. When all messages will be imported go into every folder, select all messages and Drag & Drop all messages from that folders into the appropriate Public Folders visibile at the bottom of the Outlook.

Public Folders PST imported into Office 365 Public Folders without that complex procedures or an external tools :)
