I am getting the following error but I don't understand what is wrong:

This is the relevant code:

std::pair<std::string, ChatClient&> *p
     = new std::pair<std::string, ChatClient>(username, *sock );

Your two pairs are different.

Remove the &:

std::pair<std::string, ChatClient> *p = new std::pair<std::string, ChatClient>(...);
