I have a mysql server running locally on port 3307, which I can connect to just fine through command line

mysql -P 3307 -h 127.0.0.1 -u root -p

In order to access this database through phpmyadmin, I changed these settings in /etc/phpMyAdmin/config.inc.php

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = '127.0.0.1';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['port'] = '3307';

However when I try to log in, i get an error saying "cannot log in to the mysql server". Is this maybe an issue with apache blocking the login?

I have tried to connect using both localhost/phpMyAdmin and 127.0.0.1/phpMyAdmin.

Below is my config.inc.php file

<?php

@Martin If something else were using it, he would get an error when trying to connect to it from the CLI.Barmar
this answer suggests restarting Apache.Barmar
this search shows many previous questions about this error, probably one of them will be helpful.Barmar
Is your web server listening on localhost? if you do telnet 127.0.0.1 80 and hit enter a couple of times do you get an apache message about a bad request, or does it not connect?Terry Carmen
@TerryCarmen I get a bad request message, "Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand" when manually closing the connection after a few minutes. Letting it run on its own leads to "connection closed by foreign host", and nothing else. Is that the expected result?Valley

Goto xampp>phpMyAdmin Directory.

Find the config.inc.php file.

Now change this line:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = '127.0.0.1';

To

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = '127.0.0.1:3307';

OR

open my.ini file located in the XAMPP/mysql/bin/ directory, find words that contain number 3306, eq: port = 3306, then replace it with your own, such as 3307.

The username/password that lets you login through command prompt will let you login through phpmyadmin.

They need to be written in config.inc.php file:

If this still doesn't work, you can create one more user and ensure you have in config.inc.php file the following two lines:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'testPassword'; //mysql password here
