Mapping muti-level embedded collection gives exception

Question

I do have an entity Root

@Entity
public class Root {
    @Id
    String id;

    @ElementCollection
    @CollectionTable
    List<Col> cols ;

The Collection Item 'Col' has an embedded object itself

@Embeddable
public class Col {

    @Embedded
    private Emb emb;

The 'Emb' Object is quite simple

@Embeddable
public class Emb {

    String embField;

I would expect the database tables to be like that

Table: ROOT Fields: ID

Table: ROOT_COLS Fields: ROOT_ID, EMB_FIELD

Starting this Spring Boot application gives me an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException

How can I fix this problem?

The problem is that the default access for entities is field, but for embedded objects the default access is property.

So the Col class should be

@Embeddable
@Access(AccessType.FIELD)
public class Col {
    @Embedded
    private Emb emb;

and the Emb class

@Embeddable
@Access(AccessType.FIELD)
public class Emb {
    String embField;

I would have loved a better error message then an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException!
