.htaccess rewrite with drupal and clean urls only partially works?

Question

Hey all, I am having an unusual access problem with Drupal running on a MAMP (Mac OSX, Apache, MySQL, Php) stack. The Drupal install is working fine, so I know it's not a Drupal issue. "Clean URLs" are working fine for anything with a single-level url, but nothing with 2+ path levels.

For example:

example.com/foo, example.com/bar, etc. All work perfectly.

example.com/foo/bar, example.com/bar/foo/bar, etc. Do not work.

I get an access denied (not 404) page, served by Drupal, with the login boxes and site name, but no theme applied. (and, yes, I am actively logged in as admin / user 1) ;)

If I disable 'clean urls' everything works perfectly. I am assuming this has something to do with my rewrite rules in my htaccess, but have searched the net to no avail (including drupal's site and irc channel).

You may have a busted RewriteBase, it sorta looks like you're trying to host the sites using a VirtualDocumentRoot but you're doing it with subdirectories instead of with subdomains. So if you want the site to be located at /foo or /bar then that RewriteBase needs to be /foo or /bar. Having it set to / only works if you can somehow use dns trickiness to direct to a domain or subdomain.

In our office we each have site-folder.computer.fake-domain.com and a dns server sitting in between us and the internet. So if I create a folder called foo I'll be able to access it at foo.computer.fake-domain.com/ instead of localhost/foo
