Editing .htaccess for a Wordpress install in a subdirectory

I have two Wordpress installs on the same domain. One at the top level and one at www.domain.co.uk/WP

Currently both installs are working fine.

I want to edit the .htaccess file in /WP to redirect all visitors except those from our (static) IP address to an "under construction" page.

However when I make ANY modifications to the .htaccess file in /WP (even just adding a space in a comment) I get an Internal Server Error 500 for any page under /WP.

If I remove the changes to the .htaccess file and re-upload it, I STILL get the error (on several IPs). If I restore a backup (which as far as I can see is identical to the "new" file) without making ANY changes the error goes away.

I can edit the .htaccess file for the top-level install fine and the changes are reflected.

I'm very confused here as to what's going on. As I said both installs are working as expected apart from this so my permalink settings etc should be OK.

The General settings in the /WP install are pointing both Wordpress Address and Site Address to /WP

What does the "500" error description in your error logs say? – Jon Lin
Do you mean error logs in my browser?? I don't know sorry, I was just being re-directed to a standard "Internal Server Error" page. It's definitely related to the Better WP Security plug-in because I disabled that and I was able to make and save changes to the .htaccess file. I've re-enabled it and my changes are still in place, but I haven't been through and switched on all the settings I had in place yet because I still don't know what was causing it.. – user2859245
Edit: Just tried to make more changes to the file with Better WP Security enabled and the error came back, so it's something to do with this. Disable Better WP Security before you try to make changes to .htaccess! – user2859245
The webserver has a log file, probably called error_log which has detailed descriptions of what went wrong, the front facing "500 Server Error" could mean a thousand different things. The error logs tell you exactly what is broken – Jon Lin
Thanks for this Jon. I guessed the front-facing Internal Server Error page was too simplistic! I've found the server error log. These are the only entries: – user2859245

I would move the following line:

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

to the top that was missing or out of place, and move a couple of lines from the top and put them at the bottom, namely

Options -Indexes

with a needed empty line under it.

This following line has a problem. There was an 'e' with accent over it. I changed it to a ^ but it still seems to be wrong.

RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^.*(\[|\]|\(|\)|<|>|^|"|;|\?|\*|=$).* [NC,OR]

An issue with troubleshooting problems with .htaccess is that with so many lines of code it is hard to isolate the problem. It is best to break it down into individual sections and test each section by itself.
