I am trying run cap deploy:cold to install a rails app with postgresql and I cannot figure out what is meant by 'production database is not configured' or anything else.

* 2013-01-03 08:23:26 executing `deploy:assets:precompile'
* executing "cd /home/deployer/apps/opedio/releases/20130103132324 && bundle exec rake RAILS_ENV=production RAILS_GROUPS=assets assets:precompile"

The error message means that you dont have your production database configured in your database.yml.

Take a look into your database.yml on the remote server.

It should look similar to this:

production:
  adapter: mysql2
  encoding: utf8
  reconnect: false
  database: database_name
  pool: 5
  username: database_user
  password: th3p4ssw0rd
  socket: /path/to/mysql.sock

I suggest to do the following:

1.) Do not store your database.yml under version control. When using git, just add /config/database.yml into the .gitignore file (or create that file) and commit it.

2.) Create the database.yml on the remote server in shared/config/ (By script, or manually).

3.) Symlink the database.yml from your app to shared/config on deployment.

# /config/deploy.rb:
after 'deploy:finalize_update', 'db:symlink'

namespace :db do
  desc "Symlinks the database.yml"
  task :symlink, :except => { :no_release => true }, :roles => :app do
    run "ln -nfs #{shared_path}/config/database.yml #{release_path}/config/database.yml"
  end
end
