I have CentOS 6.5

I'm trying to intsall git via yum but getting an error while installing the pre-requisite packages. I don't need to but it doesn't hurt running sudo with root.

Error message:

--> Finished Dependency Resolution
Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
       cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
       pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:

         1. You have an upgrade for libselinux which is missing some
            dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to
            solve this by installing an older version of libselinux of the
            different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture
            yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package
            requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with
            --exclude libselinux.otherarch ... this should give you an error
            message showing the root cause of the problem.

         2. You have multiple architectures of libselinux installed, but
            yum can only see an upgrade for one of those arcitectures.
            If you don't want/need both architectures anymore then you
            can remove the one with the missing update and everything
            will work.

         3. You have duplicate versions of libselinux installed already.
            You can use "yum check" to get yum show these errors.

       ...you can also use --setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove
       this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to
       do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing
       much more problems).

       Protected multilib versions: libselinux-2.0.94-5.3.el6_4.1.i686 != libselinux-2.0.94-5.8.el6.x86_64
 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
       cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
       pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:

         1. You have an upgrade for libselinux which is missing some
            dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to
            solve this by installing an older version of libselinux of the
            different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture
            yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package
            requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with
            --exclude libselinux.otherarch ... this should give you an error
            message showing the root cause of the problem.

         2. You have multiple architectures of libselinux installed, but
            yum can only see an upgrade for one of those arcitectures.
            If you don't want/need both architectures anymore then you
            can remove the one with the missing update and everything
            will work.

         3. You have duplicate versions of libselinux installed already.
            You can use "yum check" to get yum show these errors.

       ...you can also use --setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove
       this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to
       do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing
       much more problems).

       Protected multilib versions: libselinux-2.0.94-5.3.el6_4.1.i686 != libselinux-2.0.94-5.8.el6.x86_64
 You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
 You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

Error Summary
-------------

I saw this post to install extra package repo for CentOS 6 (x86_64) but that didn't help. With using this, now I'm getting a 3rd error.

# wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
# rpm -ivh epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
warning: epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID 0608b895: NOKEY
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
   1:epel-release           ########################################### [100%]
[root@server01 yum.repos.d]#

Now yum repolist shows an extra line (for extra packages - CentOS):

epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 11,838

Still, running: sudo yum -y install curl-devel expat-devel gettext-devel openssl-devel zlib-devel gcc perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker is still giving me the same error (that I got first as mentioned at top).

/etc/yum.repos.d contains -- # pwd; ls -l

/etc/yum.repos.d
total 32
-rw-r--r--  1 root root 14540 Nov  5  2012 epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
-rw-r--r--  1 root root   957 Nov  4  2012 epel.repo
-rw-r--r--  1 root root  1056 Nov  4  2012 epel-testing.repo
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root  1250 Jan 22  2014 puppetlabs.repo
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root   406 Dec  8 10:48 mycompany.redhat.repo

Puppetlabs.repo seems redundant for this post, the first 2 .repo files got installed here after I downloaded + installed the extra package repo rpm (as listed in the post/link above) and contents in mycompany.redhat.repo are:

[release.update]
name=$releasever.$YUM0
baseurl=http://manager/yum/$basearch/$releasever/$YUM0/Server
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0

[supplemental.release]
name=supplemental.$releasever
baseurl=http://manager/yum/$basearch/supplemental/$releasever

gpgcheck=0

[supplemental.release.update]
name=supplemental.$releasever.$YUM0

the approach that worked for me:

  1. sudo package-cleanup --dupes

  2. sudo package-cleanup --cleandupes

  3. sudo package-cleanup --cleandupes --removenewestdupes

  4. sudo yum update

if the the yum update still fails - continue as follows:

  1. check the installed versions of the offending library with yum search for example: if the problem is with libselinux

    sudo yum list --showduplicates libselinux

  2. in the results you'll probably see library versions ending with x86_64 or i686 for example : libselinux.i686 libselinux.x86_64

now- we need to find out which one of these to get rid of, so we run:

uname -a

if we see in the results (on the 3rd parameter from the left): something like: 4.18.16-x86_64-myserver then we are keeping the library with suffix x86_64 and getting rid of the library with suffix i686

if we see i686 on the 3rd parameter then we are getting rid of x86_64 and keeping i686

so, for example, if i have 4.18.16-x86_64-myserver, i'm going to run:

sudo yum erase libselinux.i686

once this is done - we can run yum update or yum reinstall on the library we want to upgrade (libselinux)

This is probably because the versions between architectures don't match. See how the 32bit version it's trying to update is not the same as the 64bit one.

Try updating the installed 64bit version first?

$sudo yum update libselinux.x86_64
$sudo yum update libselinux.i686

If that still fails, make sure you only have one version of the software installed and remove any older versions.

$sudo yum erase libselinux-2.0.94-5.8.el6.x86_64

I created a file at /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo or some name (I made it a little generic so that it can work for any 6.x or 7 version). It worked on 6.5. If you find any issue using this file with CentOS 7.x, then all you need is the correct CentOS-Base.repo (official .repo file for CentOS 7.x or any X.Y version) and the issue coming in the post will be resolved.

For ex: Contents of /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base-Custom.repo (PS: I named it custom as instead of using hardcoded version 6, I used $releasever variable in name, mirrorlist, baseurl, gpgkey fields inside the .repo file.

# CentOS-Base.repo
#
# The mirror system uses the connecting IP address of the client and the
# update status of each mirror to pick mirrors that are updated to and
# geographically close to the client. You should use this for CentOS updates
# unless you are manually picking other mirrors.
#
# If the mirrorlist= does not work for you, as a fall back you can try the
# remarked out baseurl= line instead.

Ran: sudo yum -y install curl-devel expat-devel gettext-devel openssl-devel zlib-devel gcc perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker and it worked without any errors.

Re-ran the same and the output came as expected.

All I need now is to use template module in Ansible (and set this file in /etc/yum.repos.d folder on the target machine) and once done, the above pre-requisites will be installed without any errors and ansible will install the desired (user defined GIT version) that I need.

I was also facing the same problem on RHEL 7.7 and ihave fixed it as below:

After running #yum update command i was getting below error:

enter image description here

Steps taken:

#yum install yum-utils

#yum update kernel*

#package-cleanup --dupes

#package-cleanup --problems

Then I have updated this packages one by one.

#yum update audit

#yum update Network*

#yum update initscripts
#yum remove grub2-tools-minimal

#yum update grub2*

and finally ran #yum update

it worked really fine.
